Working hard for Deutsch Marks
Installation (Intervention) in public space

Anne Schiffer has created 3 flags, depicting various denominations of Deutsche Mark banknotes. She has used the third series of the German mark that was introduced in 1960 by the German Bundesbank. In this work Anne Schiffer wants to bring into focus the economic motive as one of the driving forces behind migration.

Cookbook and travel posters

Whose Cookbook is a collection of recipes from South East Serbia presented alongside variations that use herbs and spices in innovative ways.  By tracing historical trajectories of the recipes and embracing the notion of hybridity, Whose Cookbook serves to remind of the Romanian, Bulgarian, Greek, Turkish, Vlah, and Roma culinary traditions informing Serbian cuisine.

Whose Cookbook is a project by Marisa Jahn & Noa Treister that contextually responds to the community in Ku_evo (South East Serbia).  Ku_evo lies in a region distinguished by its strong Vlah traditions (once a community populating Romania and Eastern Serbia) and now problematized by the high percentage of its denizens who go abroad to live as guestworkers in Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Italy. Despite this dynamic, diasporic community, Serbians claim that they continue to cook the same food wherever they go and insist that Serbian food never changes. Nonetheless, these recipes bear trace of their influence from neighboring regions (Romania, Greece, Italy, Bulgaria, Turkey) and former political regimes (Ottoman, Austrian-Hungarian, etc.)  Further, when conducting interviews with locals about their culinary practices, Treister and Jahn found a ready willingness to culinary improvise on an informal level. Finding this contradiction an interesting starting point, Treister and Jahn explore the relationship between formal vs. informal knowledge, rumor economies, and the influence of politics in the kitchen.
Food is an unmediated way to approach and include the local community in the artwork in progress. It is the most habitual performance in human life and the takes especially prominent place in poverty and post-poverty communities and cultures such as the community in Ku_evo.

In a related project, Dispatches from SouthEast Serbia is a series of travel posters designed by Jahn & Treister that deploys humor and facts to counter the putative inevitability (incontrovertibility) of the Serbian diaspora.  According to recent polls, 79% of Serbians living abroad described themselves as “happy.” At the same time, and much to the surprise of many Serbs, 76% of these emigrants say they would like to return to Serbia.  The series of posters ask the viewer to question what it would take to develop a sustainable Kucevo.

The double meaning within the project’s title — Dispatches from SouthEast Serbia – refers to both the migration of Serbians to other European locales and what Treister and Jahn discovered as the expressed desire to establish communication (or dispatches) with their extended emigrant community.

Kuvar i turisti_ki posteri

„2592“
A sculpure out of wood and rope

Before 1980, when I came to Eastern Serbia, I was completely unfamiliar with Vlah region and culture. When I first met Vlah ritual bred on a commemoration I was taken aback more by its number then by its symbolism. After 27 living in this area I am still fascinated by the numbers, but I admire the customs and the tradition. My work is a monument to Vlah ritual bread and the number from the name of the work is the number of breads that is neccessary to make for a seven years commemoration, which can be done only by gastarbeiters. When giving a commemoration they stick to rituals and they change their tradition under no influences.

Druga ko_a“

„Second skin“
Painting on textile

The techique of painting on textile was used to paint on a man’s shirt, trousers, a woman’s dress, a scarf and children’s dress and to show the symbols of life, death, birth, power, hope, past and the future of the people we call the gastarbeiters.

The clothes protects our body, allows us to communicate with other people and says a lot about ourselves. The clothes for this project was taken from a shop and was painted on, and then returned, so the shop became a gallery and a selling place of the art work.

Images of life which we carry with us wherever we go start showing in time and shape aur body, clothes, communication with others, the space and the world we live in.

„Ku_eva_ki lav“

„The Lion of Kucevo“
Painted sculpture in the open

While I was walking around Ku_evo, my attention was caught by the sculptures of lions in front of grandiose architectural buildings without any cultural or practical purpose. I decided to get one lion for myself  and give it a new aesthetic and social meaning. My lion “wears“ etno motives and village architecture which are characteristic for Ku_evo and the surounding area. I believe that way my lion connects the gastarbeiter influences with the local culture.

„Home tales“
Mural
The inner wall of the bus station

It is a visual story-telling presentation of  Ku_evo which gives information about the origin of the name of the town, the gastarbeiter “towers of Babel“, village architecture and ruined factories that have turned up-side-down, and an old mother waiting for her loved ones to return…

„Ruke“
Poetry Installation

Ku_e i ruke, zapravo, predstavljaju promene u materijalnom, telesnom i duhovnom smislu gastarbajtera.

“Hands“
Poetska instalacija

“Hands“ stand for a trilogy containing three literary works, framed into drawings of gastarbeiter houses which depict their life before going abroad, their life abroad and their temporary life here, respectively. Houses and hands, actually, depict materialistic, body and spirit changes of the gastarbeiters.

Affirmative mapping: Kucevo
Installation

Two maps, one of the town centre and one of the surrounding area, are marked with labels at certain points. These labels decribe a process of active listening to the sounds of the area. Using their own labels, users are encouraged to mark their own relationships to the locality. Points can be linked together using cord to illustrate connections. The result is a growing repository of affirmative knowledge which users share and utilise.

Pozitivno mapiranje: Kucevo
Instalacija
