City Portraits“

City Portraits is a two part project. The 1st stage is a photo studio set up in the daily farmers market in the center of Kucevo. Participants have their photo taken and then answer the question:  What do you take with you when you go abroad? Or what do you receive from abroad? The 2nd part is a video installation of the portraits and responses.

“Gradski portreti”

Fund for Future Gastarbeiter Developments
Installation

The ‘Fund for Future Gastarbeiter Developments’ is an imaginary cause for which there is no need.
The imaginary fund is presented as a set of maquettes, designed as a utopian vision of future gastarbeiter architecture, here combined with industrial terrain. The maquettes are housed in ballot boxes from the city of Kucevo’s recent elections. In this case, the boxes become collection boxes into which people can drop donations in the form of cash. The collection boxes are not sealed, – in this way anyone is free, and encouraged to raid the fund.

Fond za budu_e gastarbajterske projekte
Instalacija

Instalacija – „Porodica“
Kola_ – model A

Installation – „Family“
Collage – model A

Collage – comic is one of the models which depicts the vision of gastarbeiters at the end of the twentieth century.

The installation with mannikins and cardboard boxes shows the family of gastarbeiters, their migration with presents: for abroad, RAKIJA, of course, and for HOME electronics (DVD…).

Commemorations for gastarbeiters – A performance in the open

The work has two segments. The first part is a video installation of the commemoration – a video about an event in the village of  Neresnica, which shows a woman giving a commemoration of her husband and at the same time her own commemoration while still alive. Both of them are ex-gastarbeiters. The video installation should take place in a typical small-town milieu with all the interior details which complete the event. The second part shows a gastarbeiter who carries two large suitcases and has a rope around his neck which is tied to another wooden box that he drags along. The box contains a lump of earth with grass and a small plate that says “My Country’’ in two languages. These two parts integrate into a single entity with the gastarbeiter’s coming to the television set and lightening the candles which are a part of the decor and at the same time very important symbols in this ritual.

„Kroz prozor“
Autobuska stanica u Kucevu

„Through the window“
The bus station in Kucevo
Combined technique, comic book on windows and stencils

Our work shows our people going and coming from abroad. The main idea is to depict the trip and the obstacles our man faces. It is a two-directional journey depicted the way we see it and they experience it. Our work has four segments and it is in the form of a comic book. Every segment describes one phase of the journey in both directions (from the country he works in to the country he originates from and vice versa). The difficulty of the journey is depicted by black and white shapes. The journey becomes more and more difficult as our man approaches the border. At the very end of his journey he comes across a closed door that can be opened only under special conditions. Our traveler is too tired by then. The travellers going back abroad are shown in the background. Their journey becomes easier as they get closer to their destination.

–Full Press Release —

As part of Artlink’s Art Interventions Colloquium “The Return of the Gastarbajters”, Arrivals/Departures is a multi-genre exhibition of site-specific projects responding to the socio-political environment of Kucevo, a town of 5,000 in South East Serbia.

Produced by ArtLink, Veljko Dugo_evi_ (Kucevo’s cultural center), Op_tina Ku_evo (the municipal center), and Stanica, Kucevo’s independently-organized art collective in collaboration with a group of international artists from The Netherlands, South Africa, United States, the United Kingdom, and Israel, Arrivals/Departures inaugurates what will be an ongoing series of cultural programs by Stanica in Kucevo.

Why Ku_evo? Ku_evo lies in a region distinguished by its strong Vlah traditions (once a nomadic community populating Romania and Eastern Serbia) and now problematized by the high percentage of its denizens who go abroad to live as guestworkers in Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Italy.  A prescient question for the region concerns the problematics of braindrain, urban and rural migration and the ways that investing economically, culturally, and civically might encourage a commitment to long-term sustainable development. Might cultural activity in fact stimulate local economies, engender vibrancy and civic pride, and pose ways of problem-solving?

These artworks arise from a 3-week long colloquium entitled “Return of the Gastarbeitars” attended by artists, urbanists and ethnographers and anthropologists from the University of Belgrade and organized by Noa Treisters as part of the cultural programming by Artlink, a Serbian-based cultural NGO.

This project is made possible by SerbijaSume, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the University of Illinois (Bloomington), The American Embassy in Serbia, Op_tina Ku_evo, Centar za Kulturo „veljko Dugojevic“ – Ku_evo, KUD Art Klub Ku_evo.
